Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti

If you were looking for this pulley "1-Groove machined pulley cut from cold rolled steel. For Hitachi type alternators, unit numbers LR150-711, LR160-723, LR160-723B, LR160-724, LR160-725, LR160-725C, LR160-727, LR170-757B, used on (2001-90) Honda, Isuzu, Nissan vehicles." then those alternators cr...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti

Yesterday looked like it was to be the coolest day over the next month, so I went junkyarding. Why wouldn't I? I found a 2003 Nissan 350Z that someone had already cut the nose off, revealing an easy-to-remove, rebuilt alternator. So I felt obligated to remove it. Ya know, cuz I need a spar...

Re: Replacement Head Options

The good news is that identifying which heads you have is as easy as popping off the covers and looking. Agree that it's not a panacea; it just buys a little more margin against failure should something go wrong. The reality is that when/if the time comes to replace the heads, you'd just want to mak...

Re: Replacement Head Options

It's been suggested that 1989 MY Scorpios got the improved head from the factory. Yes, no, maybe???

I'm not recognizing that part at all. Proceed like you didn't find it.

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade

But I still think you may have to cut back the mounting boss on the Scorpio to get proper pulley alignment. I'm fine with that. Having an extra set of brackets and engine certainly helps with that process. I'm using the Bosch pulley. On the lathe I machined a recess so the nut could reach the threa...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade

Well done! It'll be interesting to see if my 110A alternator case is any smaller and thus might need less persuasion to fit, and possibly no need for the after-market locator bracket. Time will tell.

So the pulley is the stock part, re-worked?

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade

I am trying to approach this such that if somehow things don't work out I can still fall back to the original alternator. But I think all this will work out. It's just not a "drop in" when you are grinding, welding and turning things on the lathe. That being said, I still think this is the best opt...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade

I saw some very minor interference issues when I mocked up my alternator. I figured a little work with a carbide burr would solve. Not sure if the 130A unit might be a little physically bigger or not. The pulley was my biggest concern going forward, but I've not done anything more on this project si...

Re: Did 1989 XR4TI solve the previous dash and head issues?

Has anyone done a 175 hp A4LD? If someone had a C3 car, how hard would it be to create it? Everything visible would still be Merkur parts... Yes, it's been done in a XR for sure. Rebuilt to Explorer specs as Mike mentions above, it should handle in excess of 175HP all day long. Talk to Mike. He kno...

Re: Did 1989 XR4TI solve the previous dash and head issues?

Although the big change in the dash was mid-1987 (when the center speaker went away), there were several less obvious changes in the dash over the car's 5-year life. The last change was mid-89 where the A-pillar trim is inset into the dash. As a result, to look right you need the matching trim panel...

8. Although I understand that Carlisle is perhaps the closest venue for the largest number of members, it would be nice to see some MCA-sponsored events in other regions; I know that the Fabulous Fords Forever event in Anaheim is something I could realistically attend, and there are also large conc...
