Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
Here's the solution that a Scotsman came up with for me. He too had come to the conclusion that there was an incompatibility between the car and the Nissan spec alternators solely with respect to the warning light circuit. I was about to try this until I came up with today's solution. If the functio...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
Since I had both Nissan alternators in and out today I thought I'd post installed pics, taken from below, looking up. Here's the 110A Mitsubishi. It's a little easier to fit and deal with in a few ways. Unless you're adding something that has a big power draw (electric power steering anyone?) this o...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
I see that I need power across the Engine Run Relay to be able to open the fuel filler door and hatch. I don't care if I can still do that while the car is running down the road. Can I just jumper 30 to 87A and call it done? Yes I can. :headbang NissanAltRelayNoMore.jpg I even got sensible and fuse...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
This is a long way to say I agree with brokencase that you should move the sense wire off of the B+ post and over to your battery, or perhaps over to the +12 feed into the alternator lamp. I've already tried that and saw no difference. But, never mind that, you're a genius! I just got the Hitachi i...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
In fact, you might consider pulling that relay while the car is running and see if your alternator lamp goes out... Thanks for chiming in D. I should have thought of this ^^^ idea and will give it a try (see below). I recall being surprised when I took a look at the schematic and found the D+ circu...

Re: Volvo Fused Power Distribution Box & Refreshing Major 12V Connections
My memory on this is really fuzzy, but now that I look at your pic I believe I redid one of the splices underneath the dash (so not 1004). Some day soon I'll try to find the time to go out and take a look. I was thinking your description pointed to the splice being lower down behind the dash than S...

Re: Volvo Fused Power Distribution Box & Refreshing Major 12V Connections
Dug into the harness on the parts car today looking for splice S1004. As you may be able to tell from the pic, it's buried in that big wad of wires behind the instrument cluster, exactly in line with the steering shaft. All you should need to remove is the upper dash to get to it. As expected, the t...

Re: Alternator Bench Test
Some real-world data-points testing a couple original Bosch alternators from Scorpios... Diode test yielded .948 & .931 microvolts, which is probably within spec. For the voltage test I couldn't spin the alternator up fast enough with my drill to yield any charging voltage and turn the bulb out....

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
I can't believe that Brad. Just the dang bracket and mounting gets the alternator to ground. You're right Dean, but first thing I did any way was ran a heavy jumper cable between the alternator case and the battery ground. No change - battery light goes dim once the engine is started and 9V measure...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
Some new insight.... AUTOSPARK said: Your earlier voltage measurements on the car show that there is no voltage output from the warning light terminal of the alternator. Whether it's been 7.8, 8.8, or 9V, those are all essentially the same, and coming from the car side of the equation. This diagram ...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
It would be hilarious if your fuse block mods had some involvement in that matter... Oh, I've absolutely considered that. From my earlier tests there was zero voltage drop from the battery through the fuse block and on to pin 30 of the Engine Run Relay. There's a miniscule .02V drop across the main...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
Nothing like a herniated disc to slow down this project, but I was finally mobile enough today to do my bench testing. Group 65 (truck) Battery measured 12.63V at test start. The 110A Mitsubishi made 12.95V when spun up and the bulb went right out as it should. Monitoring the voltage on either side ...

Re: Alternator Bench Test
Here's a good video that describes how to do Diode test. He's doing this one with the alternator attached to the engine, but he basically turns it into a bench test by disconnecting the power to the alternator.

Re: Volvo Fused Power Distribution Box & Refreshing Major 12V Connections
You'll want to remove the left lower dash piece (the one the lamp-out module is clipped to - it is already removed in the pic you posted) and the steering column shrouds. You can then follow the red power feed from the ignition switch down to the first big splice it meets, which is S1004. You may h...
