Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

You lever them off with either HF tire irons or equivalent (e.g. pry bars). YMMV It's a pain Ed. The bead breaker and tire removal on the Harbor Freight tool works very well. You're not prying on the rims and potentially damaging aluminum or paint. Just so you know I've done the tire changing all d...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Guy mounts tire in ~ 2 minutes using no tools, just hands and feet, illustrating using the proper geometric angles of tire to wheel section is the key, even when using tools. https://youtu.be/b8IiRrgdEZg?si=LSI13PYn-m0gnUhP YMMV Yeah, but how do they unmount the tires without tools? Sure you do the...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

I do have a few tire irons, but the Harbor Freight tire changer is so inexpensive and makes things so much easier. I used to change tires on the Sprite manually. I would break the bead by laying the wheel on the driveway and then placing a board on the side of the tire and driving over the board wit...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

[Nice shibboleth that BTW: "This is no place for cheap elixirs or home brew remedies." I'll keep it in mind reviewing your future offerings.] Now you got me wondering of "home brew elixirs" I might have suggested in the past - for which I know I have dabbled in from time to time...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Back on topic, I had considered getting a wheel centering cone for this thing last year, but they were selling for ~$50 and weren't essential, so I didn't bother. Zoom ahead one year and China is knocking these things out for $10.88 shipped! So I got one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/126189014719 I hat...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Just go get the gallon of tire lube from NAPA. It's the right stuff and will last you a lifetime.

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

You need to push the portion of the tire bead already on the wheel toward the center of the wheel where the diameter is smaller and thus allows the tire to shift over just enough. This allows you to get the last ~25% of the tire over the rim edge. Oh yeah, sorry I did not notice it earlier. You're ...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Brad, I had no trouble putting big knobby retreads on the Sport Trac's 16" aluminum rims. Have you tried using the stock bar and not the duckbill? I use tire lube from NAPA, and I removed the red paint from, and polished, the paw on the stock bar. This greatly reduced the risk of marring the wh...

Re: Battery group size

Not sure I am ready to take the plunge into LiFePO4. I think they have a BMS circuit built into them so they may always be bit more expensive. You should check out batteryhookup.com They often have LiFePO4 batteries at pretty good prices. They have a bunch of other cool stuff. I have bought several ...

Re: Why does the Left-rear caliper fail rather than the Right?

I see no valid reason for one side being more vulnerable than the other, calipers or otherwise. The sample sizes that you are basing your conclusions upon are way too small. Furthermore it would only take a small bias to one side that would lead to spares being depleted first to that side. But it do...

Re: Battery group size

$25 used battery pile at EZ Pull & Save. I think it's a Die Hard Gold. It had a 7/21 date on it and tested at 12.x volts, so I nabbed it. I would have first grabbed an AGM for the same $25 if available, second an EverStart Max, this was "door 3". Certainly I would grab a junkyard AGM ...
