Like clockwork...ECT failure..

Post by brokencase » Mon Jul 13, 2020 6:50 pm

After finishing my re-upholstery and lumbar stuff...

..she starts stumbling off idle., Gets better as it warms up.

Today I decide to pull codes.. Code 21 ECT out of range..tell me something I don't know...
I am about 87K on this '88. I would say this failure is within 4k miles of the ECT failure I had in my previous '88 Scorpio.

What was the difference? This time I had to pull off the throttle body to get the ECT to crack loose. It was "fused on" after 30 plus years.
I just could not get enough umph behind it to break it loose. Ended up chopping off the plastics so I could get a socket over it.
Last time I did not have to pull off the throttle body. All I had to do is sneak an adjustable over it

Anyhow..got it back together, cleared codes, and took her for a long drive. All is back to Scorpio bliss...

I wonder how long the cheap aftermarket ECT will last... I got it from Advanced Auto for $17. Didn't want to wait around for a RockAuto item..

You should write a book.

Probably an age-related failure more than mileage. We should make a list of things to just proactively replace at this point.

I think it is more about number of heat cycles than it is mileage or age.
Its been running OK with the new sensor, but I think i'm going to pull codes again tomorrow just to be sure..

Just checking... Looks like the same ECT sensor for the XR (RockAuto parts). Is it?

I'm pretty sure most everything Ford from the mid-'80's to '94 used the same ECT. Even the OBD2 version starting in 1995 has the same transfer curve, just a different quick-connector.
