Axle Replacement - Flange seal/gasket?
There is supposed to be a seal between the two 6-bolt flanges on the axle... I have two, but am having trouble sourcing another two. Has anyone used something like Hylomar or 518 here? I think not having the seal is probably not good for the lifespan of the grease...
Edit: Looking on rockauto.com, it shows the flange is 6 on 100mm, which may be in common with older (MK2-ish) VWs, like this:
CV Gasket on FCP Euro
Anybody know about this?

wow I wasnt aware that there was a seal there. I think mine went back on bare.
I cant see why some form a gasket wouldnt work there.

VW gasket, XR CV:
NAPA carries them, under the VW part number 8D0407309
I find this fascinating!

I didn't know of this either.
I recently redid one, no gasket like this on it, but was the original axle...

I've never seen a gasket there either, but I think it's really noteworthy that VW has a virtually identical driveshaft configuration and they think there should be one... I'm gonna roll with it!

agreed, the boots I bought to re-do my axles are also for VW's....thesameguy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 11:17 pm I've never seen a gasket there either, but I think it's really noteworthy that VW has a virtually identical driveshaft configuration and they think there should be one... No surprise... look at an 020 axle!

I used the Miller gasket from OEM Parts Haus when they were still around. I see ECS has it:

When I rebuilt mine, I got GKN CVs and good grease from Pelican Parts, the gasket from OEM Parts Haus, and boots from Jeff @ MPM.

Re: Axle Replacement - Flange seal/gasket?
Thanks for that!
NAPA carried the gaskets for just a couple bucks each. The axles came with grease packs but I will use something else, something synthetic. Replacement bolts are Empi from a local VW shop.
Interesting note: The gaskets that came with the axles were just some crap fake cork... but the good gaskets from NAPA were self-adhesive, so they can be stuck to the flange then installed. From reading, that's how they came from VW as well … which seems... smart.

No worries - just too long to type twice.
Re: Axle Replacement - Flange seal/gasket?
Stupid question, but maybe you can help.
Is it possible to snap a photo of the packaging from NAPA on this part?
I gave the guy at the local Napa here the number 8D0407309 and he gets nothing.
Edit...Maybe this number is Napa compatible?

Parts were just in little plastic baggies.
Searching that part number on NAPA's website returns the right part, so I'm not sure what counter guy's issue is....
