Manual Shift Knob repair

I inherited a 1988 XR that had been in storage for 20yrs. Part of the laundry list of things needing attention is the shift knob. It is loose and when fully tightened, it faces 45 degree's to the right, towards the glove box.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I've tried washers and shims but they either look like crap or didn't work.
I'd like to keep it as much as how my buddy had it as possible but understand I might have to replace the knob.
I'm open to all suggestions and hope to have it ready for Carlisle next year.

Wind a length of Teflon tape over the shaft threads.

Don't beat yourself up thinking the car has to be perfect to go to Carlisle.
Some that show up, you'd wonder how they managed to drive them 300-500 or more miles without falling apart more on the ride.

I agree. I just need to get it past the state inspection. Currently working on the rocker cover gasket replacement. Then the rack/pinon boots and tie rod ends are replaced followed by rear disc conversion as the drums are seized and the parking brake doesn't work. Replace all the fluids and should be ready to rock.

If you don't already know, best valve cover gasket to use is the Ford part for the Ranger, they have the metal ring in them. Seems the FelPro and other floppy gaskets leak and can cause fires.

I currently have a MAHLE gasket that has the metal washers embedded around the bolt holes.

If you decide to use that, carry a fire extinguisher or 3 at the least. That is same as the felpro and leak prone.

I just use red lock tight on the threads.

I was thinking the center of the knob was loose. That's why I said get some epoxy. But if that center section is in tight and it is an issue with the threads then I like the suggestions above. I like the one piece aluminum one that doesn't matter which way it faces since it is round.

Red? When Blue Loctite might itself be overkill unless nothing less worked?

I bet that is why my leather knob came apart the way it did. Had red locktite or super glue on there. A drop of the blue should be enough.

Teflon tape didn't work. Too thin. A little electrical tape worked like a charm.
