For some reason this thread never made it to the FAQ. Now, 8 years later, I've righted this wrong. Any updates to it Ray?

One thing I'll add is that ~2000-era Volvo S80's have rear mounted batteries and can offer up some nice bits like a power distribution box with built-in fuses and nice quality heavy battery cables.

Hi all,

Dodge Chargers have rear batteries as do some of the Cadillac models of recent vintage, from 2005 on or so, IIRC. These surely would be easier to find in a scrap yard.

Lots of cars have rear-mounted batteries nowadays. Is there anything specific from the Charger or Cadillac you were proposing using?

As an additional point of reference, if you feel the 175A Mega fuse found in many Fords isn't a high enough rating (perhaps because you're running electric power steering), a 250A Mega fuse can be found on all sorts of BMWs and Jags from about 2000 onward. Just find the battery connection in the trunk and start heading upstream.

Finally got the battery mounted in the bed and properly wired up. Good thing for Carlisle every year or I'd never get anything done on this car.

Volvos supplied both the + and - 90-degree leads that I cut and crimped-on new connectors for. The universal battery mount is available from about a million different vendors on eBay. I'll fabricate some sort of enclosure to keep things out of the elements.

The Mega fuse holder came from a 200x BMW with a trunk-mounted battery. Those typically come with a 250A fuse but I'm sure the 175A I've got in there now (same form factor) will be fine. I'll have the 250A as a spare in the glovebox.

For reference, I'll be replacing the type 35 (9.5" x 6.75" x 8.50") battery pictured above with a type 51 which has dimensions of 9.375" x 5.0625" x 8.75".

Why you ask? No, not for the weight savings, but the space. The jump seats need an extra 1" of clearance and the type 51 will give me over 1.5" more.
