XR vs. Scorpio Inner Tie Rods

Post by merkurdriver »

Scorpio and XR4Ti steering racks are identical besides one detail... the inner tie rods.
Here is a picture showing the XR inner rod (top) and Scorpio inner rod (bottom).

Image

More than once has someone went to put a reman'ed rack in their XR to find out the tie rods are too long because they've been given a "Scorpio" rack. And the parts slingers on ebay (and elsewhere)
all seem to list the same tie rod for both cars. You do not want XR inner tie rods on your Scorpio, its pretty dangerous!

Might be worth a move to the FAQ?

But...as Scorp inners are NLA, is there enough threaded length on XR inners for them to work installed on a Scorp (iffy but maybe possible?).

YMMV

That is precisely why Mike said... "You do not want XR inner tie rods on your Scorpio, its pretty dangerous!"

Maybe if you want a whole bunch of toe-in it might be safe enough? Not that there would be a sensible reason for that.

Since you have those out any chance you could verify the thread pitch and diameter on those? I've been looking at some drift spec tie rods from Australia but they may end up being the cockford-ollie for the you Scorpio guys who can't buy factory fresh.

I think this was just recently moved to the FAQ. My original post date shown is from 2012, so I don't have these sitting in front of me to measure right now. However, fast forward 7 years and I have new inner and outer tie rods available for the Scorpio ( and XR4Ti ).

Ed, don't know where you got the idea that they are NLA. I just picked up a couple sets of Scorpio ones, brand new, from Russ at Rapido. Should look for some XR ones for one of these 2 racks I need to clean up and rebuild.
