Just wondering if perhaps in the case of failed rack rebuilds by other forum members that it may be caused by seal damage occurring as a result of not having these tools (or a home made substitute)?
It seems to me that T87P-3504-H Seal Protector would be particularly important as it prevents the rack gear teeth from chewing into the seals.
Many of these tools are available used on ebay for reasonable prices.
