valve cover gasket

Post by SVT Driver627 »

i tried searching but came up empty handed...

The previous owner recently put in a cork gasket for the valve cover but it seems to be laeking, the gasket only has about 40 miles on it so should i replace it with a rubber one or remove the cover and try to reseat it properly. thanks in advance.

also where can i get gaskets or what not for a fair price?

O'Reilley's or Autozone should have a blue Felpro job- many peeps have had probs with slight leakage, but i've not had any problems. You can also go buck wild and opt for a 93(?) to 95(?) ranger 2.3 gasket which has metal inbeaded for a better seal.

Someone help me out with more specifics....Ian, you there?

Throw the cork one away...far, far away.....

Go to a Ford dealer and get this gasket...

I paid about $30 if I remember correctly. Haven't had a single drop of oil leak since. It's the only choice as far as I'm concerned.

I also strongly agree with the other to use the new Ford Ranger gasket. It can be used over and over. The Felpro can & has caused many leaks and fires due the poor design. This was the gasket that Ford used to sell until they came up with a better design.

There is nothing wrong with the Felpro gasket. The problem is the valve cover. Felpro's have a groove on the center of the gasket that points upwards. XR's don't have this channel on the cover thus it's not meant for XR valve covers.

All I'm gona say is keep a fully charged fire extinguisher with you at all times then.
Why use an known inferior gasket when there is a way better one available?

ditto w/ using dealer gasket, there about $35 in texas.
don't know why but the gasket and felpro seem to not work out in the long run.
i would stick w/ dealer brand myself :D

Don't let the cost scare you away....I've had mine apart so many times it has paid for itself a long time ago.

There is no muss and little fuss (the front portion over the cam tower can be tedious at times if the gasket has been stored for a while and has taken a set). the rest of the gasket has a full steel core (not little grommets at the bolt holes).

I've got one on each of the 3 2.3T's I have running right now...no leaks.

Factory application...95 Ranger 2.3....

I have used the re-useable rubber gasket but it has always leaked a little(sometimes a lot) torqueing the bolts carefully never helped either. After the last rubber gasket failed in a big way all I had on hand was a leftover sh!ty, cork gasket ( I just couldn't see spending $30 on 1 gasket that might not even work)so I lovingly installed it, adhearing it first to the clean v/c with permatex gasket dope then lowering it onto the clean head mating surfaces followed by carfull torquing down the bolts (these aren't head bolts now). I know its a piece of crap but it has worked flawlessly for a bout a year now. I agree with cozz the felpro rubber units are not designed to work with our v/c.

Alright thanks everyone, so a 95 ranger gasket it is then, right?

Also will i need to use any kind of other sealer on the gasket or just put it on dry?

Always seal the hell out of Merkur VC gaskets. It can't hurt, and will likely save you time later.
