bleeding coolant system?
How does one make sure all of the air is out of the hose going over the cam cover to the oil cooler? It just seems like air could never be removed from there, as it is higher than the expansion tank.
Does it just depend on pressure from the pump?

In my experience, just run the engine at idle after refilling with coolant with the reservoir cap off; wait and look for the return reservoir fill tube (the smallish one on the top of the resevoir) to stream water into it (after the T-stat opens); let the engine run for a few more minutes. Then, let it cool down near completely, add or top off the coolant in the reservoir, and cap it. Typically, that will have removed most trapped air. But, often a bubble or two finds it way out the next time or two you drive the car, and you'll need to add a scosh more coolant.

You could always plumb one of these in at the highest possible point (that still allows the hood to close).
It's an air-purge valve for hydronic heating systems. About $5 at Home Depot and has a 1/4" NPT fitting. I've found it functions quite well as a low-budget swirl tank. Just be sure to get the tall type, as shown here. The short ones, spec'd more for steam heat systems, will leak.
I've used these now on two different engines for several years without issue.

The approach I suggested above--which is well known and commonly used, not only with XRs--works well enough.
But, if Batman's post caused your loins to tremble in apprehension such that only back woods engineering involving installatin of commerical heating systems' equiment can solve your cooling system's really serious issue of captive air bubbles, save yourself the trouble of imitating his solution: install a commonly available cooling system flush "T" with screw on/off cap at that hose high point. Fill cooling system, run engine at idle until T-stat opens [see earlier post], open screw cap slowly so that coolant drips/runs out for a few seconds, tighten cap, open refrigerator, uncap a Lienenkugel, swallow heartily, belch forthwith, pat your dog, kick your cat.
[And if you feel still more air trapped in your gut, the answer is: DiGel.]

Gotta second Ed on this one.
Why introduce another hose barb (read: failure point) when the stock system does a more-than-adequate job of purging air all by itself? I've never had a problem with trapped air (at least, not in my XR's cooling system!), and I'm frankly at a loss to explain why anyone who follows the fill procedure even half-heartedly would.
