Stumbled upon some vintage photos of GI Auto...
This one is from 1965. Apparently the lake was illegally filled in.

Cool thread, I bought many, many parts there in my youth. Last time I was there was to drop off my dad's '69 Rebel Wagon. Had to be 1988.

Welcome aboard. After GI's closed I stopped and realized that over the course of the previous 10 years, I had likely spent more hours there than any other place, not including my own house/property. Only 30 minutes away, convenience was the biggest factor.

My ~annual update... Looks like the property has been sold to Avalon, who recently got the zoning changed to NOT be senior housing.

I think my last string of hope that the property might once again become a junkyard has vanished. Oh well....

I wonder if they'll ever actually build anything on this site. I should go to the planning meeting and tell them there really should be a plaque memorializing the junkyard.

I haven't been doing a very good job monitoring the progress of this property. Four years later, apparently they finally got approval and have constructed the apartments. The first residents have been moving in over the past few months.

FOURTEEN YEARS it took since the closing of GI's before they finally developed the property!
Perhaps I should go to one of their community meetings and petition for a memorial statue to the junkyard!?
