XR Engine mounts

Post by my8950 »

Hi all, I am looking for information on XR engine mounts. I've used the search, and read some, but when your search has mount in the title, you get anything with mounts.
I recall some using Thunderbird mounts and modifying them, some originals are still available.
If you have any info on options and info, I am interested. I'm curious about the T-Bird mounts and modifying them, but never actually done this before.

Thanks!

Check this thread, seems the pics are gone but they mention using 3.8 thunderbird mounts.

Thanks for that...It's a bummer there are no pictures there, sounds like that post has a lot of useful information.

I remember having to drill out / tap the top mounting hole and getting a threaded rod for the upper attachment.

Agree, I have read that as well, prepared to get a set and take the chance, shouldn't be too bad I don't think.
I'll post up how it goes when I get it completed.

FWIW - my documentation when performing replacement as part of engine rebuild and reinstall action in mid 2020

Purchased 2 x new hydraulic motor mounts from Napa Auto Parts (Napa P/N 6021649) -- these mounts match existing mounts that were purchased from BAT and installed in 2003.
Drilled out center hole in both mounts with 5/16 drill bit and used Irwin self aligning tap to cut 3/8 x 16 NC thread in each.
Installed 3" double-ended 3/8-16 - 18-8 stainless steel stud (Grainger P/N 3VB88) into center hole of each stud with Permatex orange thread locker
Installed M8>M6 x 23mm reducer stud in top of each mount as locating pin (Ace Hardware); drilled out locating hole in top plate for each mount to 15/64 so that the M6 portion of the locating stud would fit through easily (NOTE: side holes on each mount for use with locating pins are M8 thread)
Installed engine mounts with 3/8-16 - 18-8 stainless steel flange nut (Grainger P/N 2YJC3) and 18-8 - 3/8 x 13/16 O.D. stainless steel flat washer (Grainger P/N 22UG09) and Pre-installed M12 x 1.75 nylon insert lock nut - zinc plated class 10 (Grainger P/N 26LJ88) and M12 x 24mm O.D. flat washer - yellow zinc plated (Grainger P/N 22YG88) - torqued to 45 lb ft as per manual

How did the BAT mounts perform vs. OE mounts re controlling vibration. Rapido's gel filled units perform well on that.

YMMV

I am also wondering how they performed. Were the bat versions the exact height as the oem units? I am measuring 78mm, 80mm, and 82mm depending on the brand. I wanted to use the original metal cage/surround for them but it seems like that will have the engine sitting too high and might cause some vibration in the drive train. If they are the hydraulic versions will they compress a little with the weight of the engine?

Metal cage? You mean the heat shield on the passenger side?

Hydraulic liquid doesn't compress.

I bought the BAT mounts circa 1998 - not sure if they changed over the years. The ones I got measured roughly the same un-loaded, but they were not very stout and compressed down after only just a couple month's use. I think they may have been for a Taurus or something - definitely NOT a custom fabrication.

I am calling it a cage for lack of better term, it can be seen in the service manual section 21-05-14 through 17. Where it is just referred to as the engine mount assembly. Looks like it would keep the engine for torquing too far and ripping out the factory style mounts. I was told to leave these out since the thunderbird mounts are a little taller. I agree the fluid would not compress, I'm thinking more like the entire mount deforming under the weight.
